If you grew up in Nigeria, chances are your school memories are filled with the smell of chalk, the echo of “Good morning ma, we are happy to see you ma, God bless you ma, amen!” at the top of your lungs, and the sting of “kneel down and raise your hands” when you got caught whispering in class. For many of us, teachers were the first real authority figures we met outside our parents. They shaped us in ways we didn’t even realize at the time.

Think about it. The class teacher who drilled 2 times tables into your head until you could recite them in your sleep. The English teacher with her dictations. The economics teacher who somehow made “demand and supply” sound like a Nollywood drama. And yes, even the PE teacher who insisted you run laps in the hot sun; only for you to later discover discipline and fitness were lifelong lessons.

Teachers are more than lesson-givers. They are builders of character, managers of mischief, and often, our very first cheerleaders. In the Nigeria of old, mental health, career planning, and emotional support were not openly discussed. Yet many teachers naturally played those roles: listening to our teenage troubles and encouraging our ambitions.

Today, teachers still carry the same heavy load, but often with fewer resources and less recognition than they deserve. They are tasked with preparing a generation that will compete in a global world, often in classrooms with leaky roofs, unreliable power, or limited teaching aids. And still, they show up. Every. Single. Day.

This is why World Teachers’ Day matters. It’s not just another date on the UN calendar: it’s a chance to pause and salute the men and women who dedicate their lives to molding futures. In Nigeria, where education is both a privilege and a powerful tool for social change, teachers are at the heart of progress.

At Sterling, we understand this deeply. Our work in education financing, and scholarships, is fueled by the belief that every child deserves access to learning and every parent deserves financial tools to support it. But behind every student and every parent is always a teacher, guiding, pushing, and inspiring.

So today, whether you remember the teacher who first made you believe you could do better, or the one who refused to let you give up, take a moment to appreciate them. Send a message, make a call, or simply whisper a thank you. Because without teachers, there would be no doctors, engineers, writers, bankers, or even future teachers.

To all the teachers in Nigeria and across the world, we see you. We celebrate you. And we thank you: for every lesson taught, every chalk stick broken, every test marked late into the night, and every future shaped quietly in your classroom.

Happy World Teachers’ Day.
