Ask a group of adults about the subject they found most difficult in school, and mathematics will likely come up. For some, it was the formulas. For others, the pressure of getting the right answer. Many simply decided they were “not good at maths.”
But children do not usually start out thinking that way.
Young children naturally count, recognise patterns and enjoy solving simple puzzles. Somewhere along the way, however, a difficult topic, a poor test result or the fear of making mistakes can affect their confidence.
Why Do Students Struggle With Maths?
There is no single reason.
A student may fall behind on one topic and struggle with the lessons that follow. Another may be reluctant to participate because they are afraid of getting an answer wrong. Sometimes, students simply need more opportunities to practise.
The challenge, therefore, is not always ability. Sometimes, it is confidence.
And that confidence can grow when students have opportunities to learn, practise and test themselves in new ways.
Maths Beyond the Classroom
Mathematics is about more than passing exams. We use it when comparing prices, planning a budget, measuring ingredients, estimating travel time or making everyday financial decisions.
Learning maths also helps students develop problem-solving skills that they can apply well beyond the classroom.
This is where competitions can play a role. They give students the opportunity to apply what they have learned, challenge themselves and compete alongside other students. For many, that experience can make learning more engaging while building confidence along the way.
Introducing the Sterling Maths Quiz Competition
To encourage academic excellence and help more students build confidence in mathematics, Sterling has partnered with Educare, organisers of the South East Maths Olympiad, to launch the Sterling Maths Quiz Competition.
The competition is open to students across Nigeria in:
- Primary 1 to Primary 6
- JSS 1 to JSS 3
- SS 1 to SS 3
Participants begin with an online qualifying quiz, with the top 10 performers advancing to a live grand finale.
Each competition cycle features a N1,000,000 prize pool:
- N500,000 for first place
- N300,000 for second place
- N200,000 for third place
Beyond the prizes, students get the opportunity to compete with peers from across Nigeria, gain national recognition and strengthen their problem-solving skills.
More Than a Competition
The Sterling Maths Quiz Competition is not only about rewarding students who already excel at mathematics. It is also about giving more young people an opportunity to practise, take on challenges and discover what they are capable of.
Confidence grows with practice. Sometimes, all a student needs is the opportunity to try.
