This belief was put into action on October 15, 2024, as we proudly partnered with the Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Association of the Blind for their annual White Cane Day celebration. This collaboration wasn’t just about financial support; it was about standing shoulder to shoulder with our visually impaired community members and championing their cause.
The day began bright and early at Ojo Barracks, where 120 participants, including Sterling Bank volunteers, embarked on an awareness walk. As the group made its way to Lagos State University, our team’s commitment shone through. They didn’t just walk; they actively supported volunteers, even providing first aid when needed. This hands-on approach embodies Sterling Bank’s philosophy of going beyond traditional banking to make a real difference in people’s lives.
By 11:45 AM, the main ceremony had kicked off at Lagos State University, with over 300 attendees, half of whom were persons with visual impairment. The energy was palpable as Ezinne Nwokafor, our Group Head of Business Banking, took the stage. She shared insights on Sterling’s products and the critical importance of business accounts, especially for entrepreneurs with disabilities. This wasn’t just a speech; it was a bridge being built between the banking sector and a community often overlooked in financial conversations.
Mr. Tunde Muhammed, the planning committee chairman, summed up our team’s spirit perfectly: “They were very helpful with the volunteers during the walk, they even helped give first aid to our member that sustained an injury during the walk. And they were very patient and understanding throughout.”
These words remind us that banking is about more than numbers; it’s about people. It’s about being there when it matters most, whether that’s providing financial services or a helping hand during a community event.
