There is a special kind of confidence that comes with wearing a fresh outfit, stepping out of a nice car and ordering food without checking the price first.
For a few glorious minutes, life is good.
Until you check your account balance.
In Naija, looking rich can sometimes become a full-time job. The phone must be the latest. The birthday dinner must be at that restaurant in Lekki. The holiday pictures must suggest that you have finally escaped the economy.
Meanwhile, your account balance is quietly begging you to face reality.
Packaging Is Not Prosperity
We all know somebody who looks like they have three houses and a passive income until it is time to split the bill.
And to be fair, wanting nice things is not a crime. You work hard. You deserve to enjoy your money.
The problem starts when enjoying your money becomes competing with people who may not even be paying attention to you.
Social media has made this competition more interesting. You see somebody’s holiday, somebody else’s new car and another person’s designer bag. What you do not see is the loan, the savings they spent, the family support or the financial sacrifice behind the picture.
You are comparing your full financial situation with somebody else’s best five seconds.
That is not exactly a fair competition.
The Price of Looking the Part
Sometimes, the most expensive thing about a lifestyle is maintaining the appearance of it.
There is the pressure to upgrade your phone even when the current one works perfectly. (Hello, iPhone Gang.) The designer outfit you can barely afford. The expensive outing you attend because everybody else is going.
One purchase becomes another. Then another.
Before long, you are spending tomorrow’s peace to finance today’s appearance.
And the irony? The people you are trying to impress may be doing exactly the same thing.
Two people can be quietly struggling financially while admiring each other’s packaging.
Beautiful arrangement. Terrible business model.
Rich Is a Different Conversation
There is nothing wrong with enjoying nice things when you can afford them.
Buy the shoes. Take the trip. Enjoy the dinner.
Just make sure your finances can afford the lifestyle, not merely the photograph.
Because looking rich and building financial security are two different projects.
One needs an audience.
The other needs a plan.
And if you must choose, choose the one that still makes sense when the camera is off.
