Every day at the supermarket where I worked, I watched valuable information go to waste—not because people didn’t care, but because they didn’t know how to use it. Small businesses were working hard but missing simple tools that could have changed everything: tools like analyzing past sales to boost profits, reduce waste, and serve their customers better.
That experience opened my eyes to the true power of data science—not as a luxury but as a necessity for Nigeria’s growth. Small businesses provide over 80% of employment opportunities in Nigeria, especially in rural areas where large corporations are scarce. Supporting these businesses is more than a strategy for profits; it is a direct way to reduce unemployment and poverty. However, to grow beyond survival, they need more than hard work—they need the tools and strategies that data science can provide.
During my time at the supermarket, I began observing sales patterns and analyzing trends, noticing which products sold more on particular days and why certain items often went unsold. I started asking deeper questions, wondering how small businesses could use that information to predict demand, avoid overstocking, and price products more effectively. This curiosity, paired with my attention to detail, pushed me to learn more about how data works—not just for big companies, but for everyday businesses in my community.
Sharing these ideas made me realize the importance of translating numbers into real solutions that people could understand. I was not just learning data—I was learning how to solve real problems. I want to build on that foundation with formal training, refining my skills to transform insights into action.
Sterling Bank is more than a financial institution; it is a partner for those ready to lead change. Through its HEART strategy—focusing on Health, Education, Agriculture, Renewable Energy, and Transportation—Sterling is already helping drive Nigeria’s development in critical sectors. I am prepared to be part of that mission. I am not seeking this scholarship for myself alone, but for the businesses I will help, the communities I will serve, and the young people I will empower along the way.
With your support, I will transform overlooked data into real opportunities—creating jobs, reducing waste, strengthening local businesses, and building stronger communities across Nigeria.
Thank you for your consideration.
