Pitch Summary

Why I Am Nominating Myself for the Sterling Bank Scholarship (in Partnership with Miva Open University)

I am nominating myself for the Sterling Bank scholarship because I am a determined young person who is committed to building a meaningful life through education, despite my current financial struggles. This scholarship would not only be a huge relief to me financially, but it would also serve as an encouragement to keep pushing toward my dreams.

I am currently a 100 level student studying Public Health at Miva Open University. I chose this course because I am deeply passionate about improving health outcomes in communities, especially underserved ones like the one I come from. Public health is more than just a career choice for me, it is a calling to serve, protect, and educate people about their health and wellness. However, pursuing this dream has not been easy.

I lost my father years ago, and since then, life has not been the same. My mother, a struggling primary school teacher, does her best to stay afloat, but even her own survival is a daily battle. As the first (or only) person in my family to pursue higher education in this way, I’ve taken full responsibility for sponsoring myself. From paying my tuition to covering house rent, feeding, and basic living expenses, everything depends on me.

I take on multiple small jobs and side hustles just to make ends meet. Sometimes, even basic needs like food and internet data for school become a luxury. Yet, I remain committed to my studies, showing up every day with the belief that this investment in myself will eventually pay off, not just for me, but for my family and those I hope to serve in the future.

This scholarship from Sterling Bank and Miva Open University would lift a heavy financial burden off my shoulders. It would allow me to focus more on my studies, rather than constantly worrying about how to survive. It would also be a strong sign that people and institutions believe in students like me, those who don’t have much, but are willing to give everything to change their story.

I am not just nominating myself for this scholarship. I am standing up for every student who works silently in the background, pushing through life’s challenges without giving up. I believe I am a strong candidate because I have the passion, discipline, and resilience to make something meaningful out of this opportunity.

Thank you for considering my application.
