Every morning, I wake up before dawn to head to a job that most people overlook. I clean, I lift, I run errands, whatever it takes to survive. But while my hands are busy with menial work, my mind is always elsewhere: thinking about the kidnappings on the highways, the farmers who can no longer tend their farms, and the families living in fear. I am nominating myself for the Sterling Bank “Beyond Education” scholarship because I believe that the same drive I use to survive today is the drive I will use to secure Nigeria tomorrow. I want to study Criminology and Security Studies at Miva Open University. This is not a casual choice. It is a response to the reality I see around me every day. Insecurity has become the greatest barrier to Nigeria’s progress. Farmers in the North cannot harvest. Travellers on the Abuja-Kaduna road live in fear. Young people in the South cannot sleep peacefully. These are not newspaper headlines to me, they are the daily conversations of the people I meet in my line of work. I want to understand the root causes of this crisis. I want to learn the science of criminal behaviour, the structure of effective security systems, and the strategies that can rebuild trust between communities and law enforcement. I have the passion and the determination, but until now, I lacked the access. This is why Miva Open University is the perfect opportunity for me. I cannot afford to stop working and attend a traditional full-time university. The flexibility of Miva, founded by a visionary like Sim Shagaya, means I can study at night after my shifts. I can apply what I learn in real-time to the problems I observe. It removes the barrier of rigid schedules and allows someone like me, who must work to eat, to still pursue a degree. Sterling’s focus on the HEART sectors – Health, Education, Agriculture, Renewable Energy, and Transportation is directly connected to my goal. You cannot fix Agriculture if farmers cannot access their land. You cannot fix Transportation if roads are death traps. You cannot fix Education if children are too afraid to walk to school. Security is the foundation upon which all other sectors must stand. By investing in my education, Sterling would be investing in that foundation. I know what it means to struggle. I know what it means to have no connections, no backdoors, and no one to open doors for you. But I also know that I have something that cannot be bought: the relentless drive to change my circumstances and, by extension, change my country. This scholarship is not just financial aid to me. It is a bridge between the man working menial jobs today and the security expert helping to build a safer Nigeria tomorrow. I am ready to cross that bridge. I am ready to work.
