Pitch Summary

On February 19, 2012, the trajectory of my life was permanently altered. I was just a student in JSS 1, the youngest daughter in a family of six comprising my father, my mother, and my three siblings. When my father went missing that day, our world fractured. As the “last born,” I watched the structural and financial foundation of our home vanish overnight. What followed was a decade long, relentless fight by my mother to keep me in school. She became the sole provider, navigating a sea of uncertainty to ensure that the tragedy of my father’s disappearance did not claim my academic future. Witnessing her sacrifice instilled in me a survivalist work ethic. I realized early on that I could not simply be a student; I had to be a partner in my own progress. After finishing secondary school, I took on various jobs to save every kobo, eventually securing enough to enroll in my National Diploma (ND) in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) in 2019 at Yaba College of technology. However, higher education in Nigeria presents unique financial hurdles; between the daily costs of handouts, laboratory materials, and transportation(went to school daily from home because I couldn’t afford hostel fees), hidden fees of schooling are constant. Knowing my family background, I refused to let these costs break me. I launched a multi faceted ecommerce side hustle while studying, transforming into a versatile entrepreneur. I began selling oil perfumes, plain t-shirts, dresses, and even essential household items to my fellow students and community members on WhatsApp. My life became a cycle of rigorous lab work by day and managing inventory and customer orders by night. This experience taught me more than just business; it taught me resilience, financial discipline, and the importance of self-reliance. Beyond my personal hustle, I have dedicated my spare time to volunteering for NGOs. These experiences have been eye-opening; they allowed me to see that my family’s struggle was not an isolated incident. By working on the front lines of community service, I have seen how health and economic instability hit the most vulnerable especially women and children. This realization is what drives my desire to study Public Health at Miva Open University. Since completing my ND in 2022, I have been determined to bridge the gap to a full degree. However, the financial barrier remains a wall I cannot climb alone. I am nominating myself because I have the ambition, the technical foundation from my SLT background, the professional discipline of an entrepreneur, and a proven heart for service. My goal is to transition from the laboratory to the field of Public Health, specifically focusing on Maternal and Child Health. I want to design and lead health interventions that support women who, like my mother, have become the sole providers for their families. With Sterling’s support, I want to prove that the youngest daughter of a missing father can rise from the challenges of 2012 to become a leader in Nigeria’s healthcare workforce. This scholarship is an investment in a future dedicated to service, resilience, and national growth.
